A Highland Ice Cream Shop Takes on Donuts This Season
Lakeside Licks scores a “hole in one” as it adds donuts to its popular Hudson Valley ice cream stand.
Imagine the perfect summer day in the Hudson Valley. You’re driving along Route 299, windows down, radio tuned to your favorite station, kids in tow (ok, this is optional), when you see it. Out of nowhere, a small building appears on the side of the road. The sign at the front reads simply and sweetly, “ice cream.” Ice cream? Your brain registers little else as you turn into the parking lot with a single-minded determination. You park the car and walk up to the charming little shop, ready to score the soft serve of your dreams.
Then you see donuts, and your whole game plan flies out the metaphoric window.
This summer, Lakeside Licks presents the Hudson Valley with this exact problem. Not that we’re complaining, of course. In fact, we’re already planning a day trip to the Highland ice cream shop’s new donut extension. Dubbed Hole in One Donuts, the spot is a must for gourmet donuts in Ulster County.
“We have been looking to add something to the Highland Lakeside Licks location for a couple years,” explains Marie Marsh, who co-owns the business with her husband, John. The duo, who also own a second Lakeside Licks in Milton, had been brainstorming offshoot offerings for a while before latching onto the donut concept. They chose to launch Hole in One at their Highland location to tie in with the 18-hole miniature golf course there.
Inside Hole in One, which opened on March 15, visitors can construct the customizable cake donuts of their dreams. Starting with a classic cake donut base, individuals can choose a different glaze, topping, and drizzle as they craft their signature treat. For anyone who doesn’t want to mix and match, the shop offers a donut of the day, which followers can preview on Facebook. Hole in One offers coffee and juice to pair with the sweet treats, which, in the near future, it hopes to offer to gluten-free eaters too.
“We wanted to find something to help us keep the stand open year-round and, by having the donut shop inside, it should allow us to do so,” Marsh reveals. Prior to Hole in One’s opening, Lakeside Licks was primarily a seasonal ice cream stand made for summer days in the Hudson Valley. The Marshes opened their first location 10 years ago in the Adirondacks before branching out to Milton in 2011 and Highland in 2014. Although they sold the Adirondacks flagship this past winter, they continue to live and breathe ice cream at both outposts and with their full-service ice cream trailer and hard-service-only truck.
Ready to get your donut on? Visit Lakeside Licks and Hole in One this season for sweet treats, mini golf, and staycation vibes galore. If you swing by the Highland shop on Thursday nights, you just may see a few vintage vehicles that drive by for the summertime car cruises.
